Three Carter Design was formed in early 2019 by Neil Carter. He has over 35 years experience in design consultancy and was previously the founder and managing director of a design and construction company specialising in commercial interiors. From initial consultation or feasibility, 3CD provide aesthetic and technical input on every level. We like to get to know our clients and we like to understand their organisation.

The practice is based in Cambridge but works throughout the UK. Although we advise and assist our clients in a broad range of specialisms our primary focus is commercial design, from offices, laboratories and colleges to restaurant’s, manufacturing facilities and hotels. Although usually engaged as the Principal Designer we can also undertake the role of Principal Contractor; a combined approach that ensures better control of budget and quality.

While very much a design led practice, 3CD never loose sight of our clients requirements, offering practical and realistic solutions to their needs, funds and programme. We have no product portfolio to promote and no hidden commercial associations because our  primary objective is always what is best for our clients.

We are knowledgeable.

Acting independently and impartially

We are professional and insightful.

We are collaborative.

We work with our clients.

On their side and realising their objectives.

We are different.

Challenging clients to think in a different way.

Delivering results beyond expectation.

We are accountable.

Capable of delivering what we design.

Within the cost and timescales advised.

We are designers.

Providing solutions to technical problems.

Doing so with flare and passion.

What’s your brief?

Pick a hat, any hat

Designers but so much more. We work for many clients as Project managers, even Site Managers, Cost Controllers, Planning consultants, Landscape architects, Clients Representatives, Architectural coordinators. Our clients need representation in numerous ways and we have the skills to look after their requirements and interests. Just ask.

The right move

Feasibility – we love it. The strategic stuff. Should you move or can you make your existing space work harder for you? What are the likely costs and timescales? What are the alternatives? Will you fit (now and in five years)? Are the services adequate? Could you sub-let? Will you get Planning Permission? Establishing reliable likely planning, design, programme and cost implications has been invaluable in 3CD’s extensive dealing with charities where public accountability is paramount. Design Consultants – The clues in the name.

Handle everything

We don’t have to (every client is different) but we can. From that initial feasibility that we like so much to arranging and planning your physical move. This might involve a full design and build solution and then even moving heavy equipment on to a specially reinforced lab floor. If you don’t have anyone that could look after that – and why would you – then we do. We Project Manage. We make it happen and we take responsibility for it. We work for you.

New place, new space

OK the nitty gritty is sorted, now let’s make it work for you. We design fantastic working and living environments. We design offices, hotels, labs, conference space, manufacturing and R&D facilities, bars, health care, restaurants, the list is endless. We will ensure your new environment exceeds your expectations by showing you what is really possible and having built that relationship will be there in the future to help when things change again.

Work smarter

Things have changed. They always do. The important thing is to notice. People live and work differently to how they used to. Technologies and design can accommodate and encourage this. We won’t claim to make you more productive – BUT by making your team more efficient, happy and collaborative we can certainly give them the tools to be so. Well working – is it working well or being well at work. Done right – it’s both. Be prepared to be challenged by us and maybe even work differently.

Extension, expansion

If you are happy with what you’ve got or where it is but you want more of it then let us look at your options. There are always options. Up down or out the side, we will work with you to find the right solution. Architectural services have always been a part of our business. Many of our projects involve obtaining Planning Permission and Building Regulations approval. We have worked on numerous Buildings of Special (architectural or historic) Interest, Listed Buildings and numerous houses and commercial properties within Conservation Areas.

Just furniture

There’s no just about it. From making sure your posture is right to promoting teamwork and cooperation, furniture is integral to any major project. Sometimes it is the project (and may include the space planning and procurement). We have access to some of the most cutting edge, functional, cost-effective and beautiful product ranges in existence. Being designers we can help select the right furniture for your building’s functionality, period and décor. Hotel, laboratory, cocktail bar or office, we know exactly where to start - and if that means an initial inventory and schedule of condition for your asset register then that’s what we will do.

Operation weekend

You may be surprised by what can be archived in those 48 hours (or 62 hours if you want to really push it) between the end of Friday and start of Monday. When the working day wasn’t an option, we have installed air-con, re-configured departments, built offices, removed meeting rooms, installed video conferencing and even damp-proofed basements. In fact pretty much anything is possible.

Refresh

Just what it says on the tin. So you’re not moving or extending but something has to give (otherwise we wouldn’t be talking in the first place). There can be a million reasons for this and a million things to address. It usually starts however with your surroundings looking a bit tired or dated. We can do something about that.

Outer space

It’s not just the interior of the building that excites us. The public realm and hard landscaping are equally important. Sometimes it is a major part of the project and sometimes it simply is the project itself. Both designing and managing the external works is a familiar process from compact residential schemes to the groundworks and hard landscaping of an entire business park. Frequently involving the design of drainage, paving, planters, signage systems, walls and water features and working closely with experienced plants people the exterior space is crucial in appearance and experience.
